Due to requests from our community, we have started a collection service for the proper disposal of retired United States Flags that are no longer serviceable. These flags should always be retired in a respectful manner and never thrown in the trash or disposed of in any other undignified way. It can be challenging to find locations where you can turn in retired flags so we decided to start collection to make it easy for community members.
We will work with partner groups such as the American Legion to make sure that flags are retired in an appropriate manner as called for by the flag code.
Flags can be placed in our collection box in the lobby of the Lakeport Police Station at 2025 South Main Street, Lakeport, CA 95453 Monday through Thursday between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM. We will make sure that flags are properly folded prior to turning them over for flag retirement ceremonies. "The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing."
