Abandoned Vehicle Program Reactivation

City of Lakeport Embarks on aggressive campaign to remove abandoned and Nuisance Vehicles

On May 4, 2017 the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement (AVA) Service Authority, comprised of elected representatives from the County of Lake and the Cities of Lakeport and Clearlake, reauthorized the use of funds dedicated for the removal of abandoned and nuisance vehicles authorized by the California Vehicle Code.

As a result of this action, the City of Lakeport has embarked on an aggressive program to identify and remove qualifying vehicles over the next couple of months.  City staff is seeking the assistance of local residents to report the locations of abandoned and public nuisance vehicles so that they may be abated.

The Lakeport Municipal Code, in pertinent part, defines a ‘Nuisance Vehicle’ as “any unlicensed or unregistered, abandoned, wrecked, dismantled or inoperative vehicle located on public or private property which creates a condition tending to reduce property values, promote blight and deterioration…” (LMC 8.35.020).  Vehicles include, but are not limited to: passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, motorhomes and trailers.  Inoperable vehicles or vehicles that have a DMV Non-Operational certificate must be stored in a garage or carport to avoid abatement action by the City.

The City also asks that citizens please help protect public funds by reporting those attempting to leave large vehicles, such as RVs and motorhomes on City streets and parking lots.  It can cost approximately $5,000 to remove an abandoned motorhome, and there are many environmental hazards associated with its disposal.  Funds available through the AVA program are limited, and one individual’s choice to abandon an RV could mean that many other nuisance vehicles will remain eyesores in our community.

For more information about the AVA program and to report the presence of a nuisance vehicle in your neighborhood, contact the Lakeport Community Development Department at (707) 263-5615 extension 20 or by email at  Additional information pertaining to the AVA program can be found on the City’s website at:
