Occidental Gypsy
6/20/2018, starts 7:00 PM

Back for another performance after their knockout concert last year, Occidental Gypsy, a red hot gypsy swing and fusion group, will appear on the Soper Reese Theatre stage on Wednesday, June 20 at 7:00 pm.  Tickets are now on sale at $20, 18 and 15.

This nationally touring acoustic act championed by critics and fans, has played to packed houses at the legendary Nighttown in Cleveland, Green Mill in Chicago, Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, World Cafe Live, Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, The Ark in Ann Arbor, the Blue Wisp in Cincinnati and many others. This year, they will be headlining at the biggest Django Festival in the U.S.

Occidental Gypsy has shared the stage with greats like Rikki Lee Jones, Jorma Kaukenen, Stanley Jordan, Joe Sample, and David Bromberg. Bromberg says, “these guys have great singing, fantastic guitar and violin work, and high energy originals that leave the crowd crazy. An awesome band.”

Words from the Critics

“The compositions and arrangements are uniquely creative. They perform with enormous heart and soul and have an original groove that is definitely worth checking out.”  Dr. Lonnie Smith

Don Heckman of the LA TIMES says “…irresistible, a virtual definition of an era when jazz was often described as “hot” music.  Occidental Gypsy’s rhythm section, usually driven by the surging rhythm guitar of Brett Feldman, hit one irresistible rhythmic groove after another, ‘hot’ was the best applicable adjective.”

Lead Performers’ Credits

Violinist Eli Bishop began his musical studies at the age of three. His studies of various musical styles–including classical, western swing, rock, country, and jazz– provided him with the opportunity to perform with a wide variety of musical artists ranging from Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers, to the Wooten brothers, to Bill Evans of the Miles Davis Group and Wynton Marsalis.  In 2014, he won the Mississippi Bluegrass Championships, best senior fiddle.

Jeremy Frantz, on guitar and vocals, holds a Masters of Music in Guitar Performance from Duquesne University, where he studied with legendary jazz guitarist Joe Negri. His performances are known for their powerful jazz guitar with sultry and smooth vocals reminiscent of the bygone era of swing.  Jeremy is the most recent addition to the band, and brings a straight-ahead jazz sensibility and tight playing that serves as a fantastic counterpoint to the wildly driving gypsy rhythms.

Brett Feldman, composer and lead guitar, a founding member the band, plays and learns music in the true gypsy tradition: by ear. When Feldman first heard Django Reinhardt’s Hot Club Jazz, a passionate love affair with this spirited music began. Within the band, his talent for composing and arranging this complex music is showcased in a number of original works.
