Included on the agendas are such things as the General Plan, Rezonings, Use Permits, Subdivisions, Architectural and Design Review, planning policy matters, and interpretations.

The Planning Commission is the City Council’s advisor on land use planning matters.  The Council may choose to follow the recommendation of the Commission or not.  They may reverse or modify Commission actions or send proposals back to the Commission for further review.  Commission decisions are subject to appeal by the City Council, and the Council has the final say in all City matters.

The City of Lakeport Planning Department serves as the Lakeport Planning Commission’s staff.  The professional planners advise the Commission on General Plan, Specific Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, and other land use regulations.  Staff provides background information and recommendations on the proposals that are under the Commission’s consideration, answer technical questions, and make sure that the meetings have been properly advertised in advance.  The Planning Department staff members will always be in attendance at Commission meetings.

The Lakeport Planning Commission meeting, which includes study sessions and workshops, are open and public.  This means that a quorum of Commissioners can only discuss Commission business in a public meeting, and meeting agendas must be posted at least 72 hours in advance.  Topics for discussion are limited to those set forth on the agenda.

At its regularly-scheduled hearings, the Planning Commission weighs planning proposals in light of State and Local regulations and potential environmental issues, and listens to the testimony of project proponents and interested parties.  The Commission usually considers several items at each hearing, considering each proposal separately, and taking action before moving on to the next items on the agenda.
